The Buddhist Council of Queensland (BCQ) is one of five state-based Buddhist councils in Australia. It is a member of the Federation of Australian Buddhist Councils and collaborates with the Australian Sangha Association. 

In early 1999, Buddhist leaders met with the Queensland Minister assisting the Premier on multicultural affairs. The meeting acknowledged the rapid growth of Buddhism and the large number of Buddhist migrants, highlighting the importance of recognising Buddhism legally and administratively and establishing clear channels of communication between government and Buddhist communities. At an inaugural meeting with the Director of Multicultural Affairs in July 1999, the Buddhist Council of Queensland was formed. The Council was incorporated as a not-for-profit organisation in 2000.¹ 

The Council comprises member centres from across Queensland’s Buddhist community and represents all Buddhist traditions equally and transparently. It supports member organisations with visa and immigration, town planning and taxation matters, and liaison with government. The Council also provides a Buddhist voice in interfaith dialogue, religious education, chaplaincy and pastoral care. It has published a detailed book series and articles documenting the history of Buddhism in Queensland, produces Buddhist educational materials for schools, and serves as a contact point for information about Buddhism.² 

On 13 May 2026, the Council organised the inaugural Vesak Day celebration at Queensland Parliament House. Attended by Buddhist and other faith communities, the event received bipartisan support from the state government. The Premier’s Vesak Day Awards were presented to nine Buddhist leaders in recognition of their compassion, service, humility and dedication to the community. ³
