CITYZEN Young Adult Buddhist Community, Buddhist Society of Victoria

CITYZEN is a young adult Buddhist community, established by the Buddhist Society of Victoria. Founded in 2016, it comprises young adults aged 18 to 35, who meet biweekly for Dhamma, social and volunteering activities, both online and in person. Dhamma activities include discussions with diverse speakers (including monastics) and exploration of the application of Buddhist teachings to daily life. CITYZEN members organise silent meditation retreats on weekends, during which members practise group meditation and observe noble silence to deepen their understanding of mindfulness with peers. Annual meditation retreats held at Newbury Buddhist Monastery offer further opportunities to learn, practice mindfulness and socialise with young Buddhists.1

The CITYZEN community emphasises the importance of making Buddhism fun for its members. Regular in-person social activities are organised to make Dhamma learning enjoyable. Social activities include games, picnics, movie nights, potluck, mindful walking, mindful cooking, yoga and Dhamma Days. CITIZEN also participates in numerous volunteering activities, including those organised by the Buddhist Society of Victoria, Newbury Monastery, significant Buddhist festivals such as Vesak Day, Kathina Day, Foundation Commemoration, the International Day of Peace, and environmental sustainability initiatives. CITYZEN has a strong online and social media presence, with accounts on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, and photos and descriptions of activities posted on the Buddhist Society of Victoria website.
