In Conversation- Mapping Buddhism in Australia: From Seeding to Flourishing

From June 2024 to November 2025, the Buddhism in Australia research and videography team travelled across Australia to document the communities and stories of Buddhism in Australia from the 19th century to the present. We interviewed descendants of early Buddhists, community leaders, educators, and curators, and documented Buddhist heritage and materialities at Buddhist temples, centres, schools, and cemeteries in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Thursday Island and Christmas Island.

In this conversation, Prof Anna Halafoff and Venerable A/Prof Juewei, Chief Investigators of the project, will discuss the fieldwork findings. This conversation also foreshadows the Buddhism in Australia Digital Atlas, an educational resource that maps Buddhist figures and places across time and space, to be released at the Project Launch in on 22 September 2026 at Nan Tien Institute.

We recognise the Triple Gem of Buddhism: the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Together, they make up the lineage, philosophy, and community of Buddhism that the Buddhism in Australia Research Team has embraced to deepen our engagement, reflection and scholarly investigation.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of Country throughout Australia. We pay our respects to all First Nations peoples and acknowledge Elders past and present.
